Unwinding After Another Law School Semester

Congratulations law students – you did it!! Another law school semester in the books is a great feat, no matter what your grades may look like come January. You persevered, you worked hard, and you finished. And while you may have found yourself day-dreaming about the days after the fall semester, now that it’s here, it can be a little overwhelming.

You might be worried about beginning a job search, or maybe you’re already looking ahead to Spring Semester and shaking at the thought. But I encourage you to pause and really soak in all of the things you have accomplished in the Fall, even if it was merely finishing the semester.

And to be honest, there isn’t even much you can do right now. Books aren’t available yet, and (especially if you’re a 1L), employers aren’t looking to hire until you get your grades back. So you’re almost forced to unwind. But as law students, I recognize that it can often be difficult for us to stay present and enjoy the feeling of weightlessness on our shoulders, which is why I wanted to take a minute to encourage you and myself to truly take a BREAK!

If your head was buried in books for the last 4 months and you didn’t allocate much time to family or friends, take advantage of that now. Watch a holiday movie, go see the lights, or do whatever it is you like to do this time of year. I find that the older I am, I feel less and less in the holiday-spirit. But I am on a mission to change that this year – and I invite you all to join me!

When January rolls around (and it will – quickly), you will be able to deal with the aftermath of grades and jobs and responsibilities. But right now is carved out for you to do absolutely nothing! I’ve been really bad at making time for this blog, but now that I have nothing looming over my head, I get to write this post. So whatever your hobby may be, take some time and do it. Because you know as well as I do that when Spring Semester starts to bare its teeth, you’ll wish you had taken advantage of finding joy in the nothingness.

See you all next semester 🙂
